The happy Yogi Project
About
The happy Yogi Project really began after a near death experience when I was 13 years old. After an accident on a skateboard with a car, I ended up in hospital in a coma almost dead. The only thing I remember of that time is floating around outside my body, in the most amazing state of bliss imaginable, looking down at my body on the hospital bed.
After recovering from the accident my outlook had totally changed. There was now no doubt that there was some sort of continuity of mind and life beyond death. After waking from the coma I immediately began to investigate the great spiritual traditions and religions of the world, looking for an explanation for the out of body experience. This sort of thing wasn't such a hot topic in the world focussed on material success. I continued to ask around and eventually found answers in the teachings of the contemplative Yogis and Buddhist practitioners of the Himalayas.
Did you know the Himalayan Buddhists don't traditionally consider themselves as Buddhists? Buddhist was a name given by Westerners which really only took hold in the early 19th centuary. Traditionally these 'buddhists' considered themselves Ngakpas which simply meant those who look inwards, or seek truth inwardly. The buddhist yogins, meditators, and mystics looked within their own minds to study and understand the ultimate nature and truth of reality, rather than looking outwards.
Over time the mystic ngakpas developed into the more organised branches of ordained 'buddhist' monks and nuns we are aware of today. However the non-ordained 'householder' practice continued as well. The yogis were considered to be the most accomplished and realized of the Ngakpas. Having achieved and stabilized the union of ultimate and relative reality and transcended the ordinary perception and state of being. This union with the ultimate truth and ultimate nature of reality is the ultimate union referred to by the word yoga in the ngakpa tradition. The high yogis achieved mystical powers and deep insight through their timeless effort and purification practices, leaving insights and guidance we can use to improve our health and lives today.
The happy Yogi Project aims to understand and help people utilise the truths and insights left by those old yogis, so we may achieve true healing and complete happiness and health. The happy Yogi Project is also the re-affirmation of an original decision I made after leaving school. That was to make a living in everyday society and yet still persue a genuine spiritual understanding and practice without having to renouce wordly life and become a renunciate monk or hermit. The happy Yogi Project aims to promote inner values and positive healing change from the depths of within us. To help clients to understand the metaphors that their illness and state of health is revealing and offer a genuine holistic approach to improving health and wellbeing physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. In the medium term The happy Yogi Project aspires to facilitate genuine awareness and practice of shamatha and Vippasana meditation with a view to holding retreats and Thai Yoga massage courses. It also aims to continually expand this site to offer more useful information including pages on metaphysical causation, a buddhist yogis lifestyle, herbal medicines, diet and nutrition. As well as growing the site to offer general complimentary medicine protocols and guidelines for all manner of disease and medical conditions.
In the long term, The happy Yogi Project aims to raise funds to purchase land and create a meditation retreat centre. A completely non-sectarian and non-religeous centre where we, the household practitioner, can retreat from the hustle and bustle of daily life for an evening, day, weekend or week. We can learn about authentic meditation, rest and reset from the hustle and bustle of worldly life and become familiar with and learn to access the deeper sub-conscious aspects of our mind. For the benefit of ourselves, our families, our relationships and ultimately for a more harmonious and responsible society.
My qualifications are a Bachelor of Health Science (complimentary medicine), an Advanced Diploma of Western Botanical Medicine, a Diploma of Nutrition, and a Diploma of Remedial Massage. I have also completed extensive full time study of Traditional Thai Yoga massage and pregnancy massage in Northern Thailand in both colleges and with traditional healers in hill tribe villages. I am a long term pratitioner of meditation and my guru or primary teacher primary is a highly regarded Master and Tibetan Lama whom I visit regularly. I have also practiced an authentic lineage of Usui Shiki Ryoho life force renewal (Usui reiki) daily for over 20 years and am a fully accredited member of the Australian Traditional Medicine Society (ATMS).
