The Holistic View
What is Holistic Health?
Medical science has long known that we are electromagnetic beings. Doctors use Electropcardiographs to make diagrams or records of the electrical activity of the heart and electroencephalographs for the electrical activity of the brain. The electroencephalograph measures the activity from outside the head without even touching the body. Can you believe your mind is not contained in your brain?
Modern Physics today takes this further to show we are actually not even as solid or permanent as it seems. In reality, science shows us, we are a field of energy waves in constant motion. Ourselves and the entire universe is actually like a 3-dimensional projected hologram, ultimately no more real than a dream. The sub atomic particles making up our tissues are actually flashing in and out of existence millions of times a second and there is nothing permanently solid there at all, despite how we perceive things. Ancient meditative yogis had discovered these truths of reality long before modern science had the technology to measure or infer any of it. Through deep and profound meditation and yogic experience, the yogis conscious awareness was trained inwards towards its own experience and directed beyond the normal perception, to ever subtler layers of mind and intelligence. Getting much deeper than the thoughts and experience of our ordinary ego mind they experience the movement of blood and fluids through the our organs and tissues, and deeper again to experience the sub-conscious awareness of cell division and light. Such profound training and experiences of our subtle mind, awareness and intelligence is how the contemplative yogis came to understand the various layers of energy such as human auras, some of which is still not measurable by scientists today. The diagrams of energy lines, the human aura and subtle bodies as well as insight into the metaphors of human disease have been left to us as the legacy of these ancient mystics.
Although modern medicine generally treats the symptoms of disease with drugs or surgery the holistic view looks deeper for an underlying imbalance as cause of the disease. Although pharmaceutical drugs and surgery is invaluable, there are times when an illness will come back. Or despite the symptoms being managed or removed by the surgery and drugs, we just don’t regain our full health. This is where the holistic understanding of reality and traditional and energy healing can compliment modern medicine.

THE HOLISTIC VIEW
Often in a treatment or consult, a client will ask things such as, What disease do you think I have? What does that pain or sensation relate to? Can you fix it? or How long will the treatment take? These are all very valid questions particularly within the context and framework of modern medicine. Not however always so relevant to a holistic healer. As patients today are accustomed to an examination, maybe some tests then another appointment scheduled, a diagnosis then some kind of medicine or surgery, the somewhat different paradigm of a holistic healer needs to be appreciated before engaging in treatment. This way the patient is less likely to be confused, disapointed or left wondering what happened after a session and can appreciate that what they experienced or the changes to diet, lifestyle or attitude they are asked to consider, are part of a deeper rebalancing and healing process.
When you see your Doctor for an illness their approach is based on the premise that the basic stuff of the universe is matter-energy. Scientists have learnt about reality by studying the measurable world. Consciousness is said to have emerged from matter (the brain) through evolution. Conscious intelligence apart from the physical brain is intanglible, unknown and un-measurable and therefore apparently inconceivable. This gives rise to the approach of modern medicine, its process and even the predominant use of pharmaceutical drugs as treatment, and its focus on on symptoms.
The alternate holistic view of reality however puts mind, consciousness or intelligence as primary and matter-energy as arising in a sense from consciousness. This is the holistic view and experience of the ancient yogis and the holographic understanding of reality of modern scientists in the field of quantum physics. Reality arises from an ever subtler consciousness than we generally perceive and has a natural balancing system keeping things in harmony. This may be like the scab heals over a cut in our skin to restore balance without us thinking or talking about it. It is the intelligence of this natural balancing system to which holistic treatment aims to access and encourage. In this sense a modern diagnosis or name for the disease is not always entirely relevant. The holistic approach to restoring health necessarily starts with an assessment of a persons inherent constitution. Where modern medicine identifies the 3 body types endomorph, ectomorph or mesomorph as arising from predominant tissue types from when a human foetus is growing in the mothers womb, the holistic view recognises 3 ‘constitution’ types instead; as the ramifications are not limited to merely body and tissue but reveal clues understanding the psychology and personality, appropriate diets, lifestyle and even most suitable habitat and environment to promote optimal health for each individual person. To further research the concept of constitution types you can search ‘dosha’ or ‘doshas’ (Sanskrit) and use the constitution questionnaire on our downloads page to give you an idea of what your constitution may be.
Holistic health is necessarily integrated with the nature of reality. We can interact with the world by only our body, speech and mind. As we embark on the path of true healing and wellbeing we become increasingly aware of how our thoughts and behaviours influence our happiness and health. Health is balance and disease is imbalance. Our wellbeing is an ongoing process of healing and living in harmony with our unique constitution. The process of true healing results from training the mind to be healthy and taking actions with our body speech and mind that bring our primary energies into balance and harmony.
